Future wireless communication systems will provide a multiplicity of services for an ever growing number of mobile users. Many of these services will depend on the ability of the system to localize and track users as well as to identify them, guaranteeing both system security and users’ privacy. In such a context, we present an integrated solution for localization, tracking and automatic personal identification for radio-navigation in realistic indoor (i.e. GPS-denied) environments. Actually, the goal is to present a demonstration of our system (composed of some WSN nodes and an innovative wireless biometric badge) which implements an innovative distributed positioning/tracking algorithm, and it is also able to authenticate users via a fingerprint matching, in order to enable them to have access to restricted areas with a high level of security. In fact, the proposed badge follow a full system-on-card approach (i.e. it is provided of an embedded fingerprint scanner and it is able to locally execute the fingerprint matching while communicating to the system only the matching result by means of a secure wireless channel). The distributed localization&tracking algorithm and the wireless biometric badge are the results of R&D activities conducted in the last years by several professors, researchers, and students in the Center of Excellence DEWS at the University of L’ Aquila in Italy, as well as its R&D Spin-Off WEST Aquila S.r.l.

Project Description:
Future wireless communication systems will have to enable and provide a multiplicity of services for an increasing number of mobile users. In this context, it is very important that wireless technologies might provide these services in a secure and robust way to the final user, by guaranteeing the privacy of users regardless of the specific and requested service. Moreover, future services are expected to be more and more specialized to the user personal needs, as well as user’s current location in space on a given time. The main aim of this demo consists in providing a solid proof-of-concept of a networked embedded systems, which provide localization and tracking services to control, in a distributed fashion, the access to restricted areas. More specifically, the demo will show that a wireless biometric badge represents an efficient integrated solution for localization and tracking in radio-navigation applications, as well as for automatic personal identification in realistic GPS-denied environments.
